Following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, the Crown negotiated several largescale purchases of land in Te Waipounamu (the South Island) whereby almost the entire land base of Ngāi Tahu, some 34.5 million acres of land, was sold for £14,750. 1 Ngāi Tahu’s landlessness was the subject of several Crown investigations in the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
I congratulate the New Plymouth City Council for their foresight and courage in making the recent decision to create a Māori ward. I hope this is a sign of things to come. Occasionally rangatahi studying or thinking of studying law ask me for advice.
Custodian trustees11 are responsible for:

• investing funds
• disposing of assets
• signing documents as directed by the responsible trustees.

You will need to provide:
evidence of meetings held (including the notice) to add, reduce or replace trustees and the meeting minutes
resignations (if any) for existing trustees
evidence that a trustee or trustees have passed away
The person(s) being becoming a trustee will also need to complete a trustee consent form to indicate that they consent to the appointment.
Where that land is vested in a trust or an incorporation,
such an order will only be made with the consent of the trust
or management committee, and may be made for a specified
period.
Nominations
3.9 Nominations must be in writing.
3.10 Nominations must be received by the secretary no later than 14 days before the Annual General Meeting or
Special General Meeting at which the election will be held.
3.11 The secretary must reply to the person making the nomination to confirm they have received it.
3.12 The secretary must contact the nominee to ensure they consent to their nomination.
