The Court may approve hourly rates that are higher than the hourly rates paid by Legal
Aid Services for appearances before the Waitangi Tribunal.
14. In determining the fees for a lawyer appointed by the Court’s own motion or for an uplift
in the hourly rate for appointments on applications by parties, subject to the overriding
discretion of the Judge, the Court will take into account the factors outlined above and
any other relevant factors.

Historically, the Māori Land Court Bench
Book, like all Court bench books, was accessible
only to Judges and Chambers staff via Te Pā, the
judicial intranet. However, on 14 May 2025, it was
made available to the public and court personnel
as part of an initiative led by the Chief Justice to
enhance access to judicial resources.
