During the Māori Freehold Land Registration Project, the Court came across a number of instances of this kind. In a small number of cases with the consent of the owners of the land the Court was able to formalise the situation.

With shares held by individuals becoming increasingly fractionated but shares held in whānau trusts being relatively stable, I foresee a time when these whānau trusts will be major shareholders in trusts and incorporations.

Whenua tōpū trusts , again a land management trust , which provide for iwi or hapū based
trusts designed to facilitate the use and administration of the land on behalf of a wider class
of owner, normally a whānau , hapū or iwi grouping.
